The minute you’re contacted by any police agency, or have any sense that you might be under investigation for a crime, you should always contact a lawyer first. Even if you didn’t do anything wrong, it’s better to have a lawyer walk you through the process than to go in blind on your own.
As an attorney representing clients in just this sort of situation, I frequently call the police detectives myself to find out what’s going on and what they’re thinking. This way, I can see what there is to do to try to resolve the matter.
Notably, it’s much easier for me to do this as an attorney than it is for the individual being investigated to do it themselves. Often, civilians who don’t know the law and the procedure of criminal investigation say more than they should, even when they haven’t done anything wrong.
So, you always want to get connected with an attorney before trying to address these issues, ideally as soon as you realize that you’re under investigation. Guilty or not guilty, it’s always best to consult with the attorney first.
If you have been arrested and charged with a crime in Texas, the most important step that you need to take is to speak to a lawyer as soon as possible. The sooner you do this, the better.
One of the reasons that it’s always best to do this as soon as possible is that I often have clients write down exactly what happened while it’s still fresh on their mind. This ensures that the order of events doesn’t get confused in the mix of interrogation and police interference.
Again, whether you’re guilty or innocent, it’s important for me as your attorney to know exactly what happened and exactly what you did, where you where, and how we might be able to explain to the police why you’re not guilty.
But that’s the most important thing is to get with a lawyer as quickly as you can after you’re arrested, even before you’re charged. So now, if you get ahead of the game, you’re in a much better situation down the road. So I would encourage the potential client to immediately contact a lawyer if you think you’re going to be arrested or if you have been arrested.
